The event was held on March 19 at Accenture's headquarters in the Iberdrola Tower in Bilbao and was part of the World Economic Forum's (WEF) “Transitioning Industrial Clusters towards Net Zero” initiative, of which NZBISC is a member. The event focused on exploring the potential of aggregating demand and digital technologies to contribute to a 24/7 clean energy supply and speed up the decarbonisation of industrial clusters, and provided an opportunity for the members of the initiative to share best practices and lessons learned.
It was attended by several representatives from European clusters that are part of the WEF initiative, such as the Port of Antwerp-Bruges, Humber UK and Brightlands Chemelot Campus, among others, with the aim of discussing decarbonisation policies and partnerships, and strengthening cooperation between the initiative's growing community of industrial clusters.
Cristina Oyón, Director of Technology, Innovation and Sustainability at SPRI, took part in the session to present the main lines of work and progress of the Net-Zero Basque Industrial SuperCluster (NZBISC) initiative, consisting of a detailed analysis of the Basque industrial sectors that are most intensive in terms of energy consumption and emissions (refining, iron and steel, cement, pulp and paper and foundry) and in drawing up roadmaps for decarbonising them, identifying the technological challenges of decarbonisation measures and solutions that need to be looked at so that they can be implemented.
Meanwhile, Jon Fernandez, Head of Projects of the Basque Energy Cluster, explained that the current and potential capacities of the Basque Country were analysed in order to develop the technological measures defined in the roadmaps, identifying the companies that provide technological solutions for decarbonisation (equipment manufacturers, engineering companies, research and technology organisations) in four value chains: energy efficiency, heat pumps and electrification of industrial processes, use of green hydrogen and oxy-fuel combustion.
He also presented the new Basque Industrial Hub (BIH4C), which is made up of 10 Basque companies and entities within the framework of the European IS2H4C project, "Sustainable Circular Economy Transition: from Industrial Symbiosis to Hubs for Circularity", and is aimed at creating new sustainable regional development models by searching for and implementing energy synergies, the efficient use of resources and technological innovation.
The event also brought together a wide range of stakeholders, including EPRI, the US Electric Power Research Institute, and Iberdrola, Petronor and ABB, who also had the opportunity to visit Accenture's Bilbao Innovation Center, also located in the Iberdrola Tower.
Net-Zero Basque Industrial SuperCluster (NZBISC)
The aim of NZBISC is to speed up the transition to net emissions in Basque industry by boosting energy efficiency and decarbonising energy consumption, and promote new opportunities for Basque companies arising from the development of new technologies and innovative services in the area of decarbonisation.
The initiative is driven by SPRI and the Basque Government, with the participation of the two main energy companies in the Basque Country, Iberdrola and Petronor-Repsol, with the collaboration of the industrial clusters that include the Basque industries with the highest greenhouse gas emissions (Aclima, Siderex, AFV, ClusterPapel) and the Basque Energy Cluster, representing the value chains that can provide decarbonisation solutions.
