On March 18, the Energy Cluster co-organised an information event with BasqueTrade & Investment and Austrade (Australia's international promotion agency) to raise awareness about energy-related opportunities in Australia. In addition, six Basque companies shared their experiences on developing their business in Australia.
In recent years, Australia has become a country of great interest to companies in the energy sector. The policy shift to invest in renewable energy and deployment of a modern. reliable electricity grid has led European companies with years of experience in the sector to keep a close eye on Australia.
Certain European companies have been working there for years, with onshore wind farm projects, or in the photovoltaic market, and generally this has always been closely linked to electrical products and equipment. Electricity storage projects have found a very interesting market niche in the country, a position from which some Basque companies have been benefiting.
However, the boom in recent years, with the inclusion of new policies and regulatory systems favourable to renewables, including offshore wind energy on the east and south-east coasts, means that opportunities for Basque companies in the energy sector have increased substantially. All of these topics were explained in more detail by the organisations that attended the information event on March 18. The Australian Government's Department of Energy gave a presentation on the country's situation with regard to the sector and the prospects for the coming years, both in terms of deploying renewables, the electricity distribution and transmission network and energy storage.
The states of Victoria and South Wales focused their presentation on their offshore wind offerings, with offshore wind auctions scheduled for later this year. The event concluded with the highlight. A panel of six Basque companies talked about their experiences working in Australia, and discussed details to be taken into account, differences with other markets, type of projects carried out, etc.
This panel, which was moderated by the Basque Energy Cluster, included Arteche, Iberdrola, Ingeteam, Saitec, Sener and Siemens Gamesa.
Arteche has more than 20 years experience working in the country, and they described their approach as a supplier of electrical products, which they now see as a great opportunity due to the renovation and expansion of the electricity grid that is planned there. Ingeteam shared that view, but also noted the opportunity presented by electrical energy storage systems in Australia. Iberdrola entered the Australian market a few years ago, but it has plans for deploying both onshore and offshore renewables in the country. Siemens Gamesa also sees a great opportunity, especially in offshore wind power, in a country that is aiming to become the world's fourth largest economy within a few years.
Sener and Saitec, both developers of floating wind platforms, provided a vision for offshore wind power, more specifically for floating wind power. As the sea is very deep in some parts of Australia, floating wind technology also presents a great opportunity for Basque companies working in the sector.
In this context, the Basque Energy Cluster and its member companies intend to seize this opportunity in the Australian market by organising a business mission during the week commencing July 8 for the Australia Wind Energy event. There is still time for any partner company interested in joining the mission to do so.
